I don’t really give a toss about the Supra as a whole, so watching the whole thing play out has been quite amusing.

It’s pretty entertaining actually seeing the internet either completely fa nboi out or “ REEEEEEEEEEEE” rage out at the same time

man he forgot the part where they’ve made the new one look almost sleek
how could they ruin a perfectly good chubster

Wow he really learned a lot about what it means to build a “real” Supra from Need For Speed: Underground.

I’d buy a Subaru Supra Legacy....
![]() 01/22/2019 at 09:37 |

If I was the head of Toyota I’d stick a V6 Camry engine in it and tell everyone to eat shit and go buy a Tacoma if they want a properly made Toyota.

The more and more I hear hatred towards the Supra, the less and less I care. I’d wager that 99% of people bitching about the Supra are people who can’t afford them to begin with, so their opinions are all moot.

damn, you beat me to this exact comment

See: Every new car ever made. Can’t do much if most enthusiasts’ $20K budget itself is stretching it.

This is true. This is why modern cars are packed with tech and luxury features, because that’s what the people who can afford them actually want.

LMAO - he wouldn’t have bought one had they given him exactly what he wanted.

Same here. I think the Mark IV Supra that everybody goes crazy for is ugly. This new one, I also think is ugly ... but I honestly couldn’t care less. It’s been really entertaining to watch people lose their shit over it.

Exhibit A of how much exactly your average car enthusiast knows about how cars are made (almost nothing). Every panel on a car both plastic and steel is the product of some kind of machine. Injection molding for the plastic, stamping and casting for steel and other metals . An incredible amount of tooling is required, as are parts suppliers since there’s going to be things car companies need made that they can’t make themselves, and those things need their own machines and tooling as well.
The tooling for the JZ80 is long gone, so Toyota would need new tooling as would their parts suppliers if they wanted to make it again. They would also have to change many things about the car given that the ~20 year old design would likely not be regulation-compliant in 2019 without modification. Given that, they’d just prefer to make an all new car vs. just making something that isn’t even quite what it was before.

Some people are gluttons for punishment, plus who can look away from a train wreck ?
![]() 01/22/2019 at 09:58 |

What’s funny is that Honda followed that philosophy with the original NSX - produce the same car but with minute updates - and the enthusiasts were shitting their pants over how it wasn’t being replaced with something more competitive to beat the flavor-of-the-month sportscar from Europe.

The difference is your well thought out comment got one like from me, his hot take gets 275 likes LOL

Almost every current gen car is shit on until the next gen comes along and then suddenly everyone pines for the old one, sooner or later.

I say that Toyota should’ve respected the history of the original Celica Supra, and made it the way they used to make it.
That is, it should be a short-wheelbase 6-cylinder Camry coupe , with the Celica being a short-wheelbase 4-cylinder Camry coupe .
![]() 01/22/2019 at 10:47 |
|
I agree about the manual trans, it should be an option, but everything else is a bit extreme...
I mean, keeping an existing platform around with only mild upgrades and expecting it to sell well? That’s Nissan level tactics.
![]() 01/22/2019 at 11:06 |
|
While I don’t disagree with your overall point, I'm sure Honda's engineers would be mortified to have their changes between the NSX formula of old and the newer car described as "minute." Hybrid system, turbocharging, trick gearbox, all-wheel drive... I bet that was pretty involved.
![]() 01/22/2019 at 11:26 |

Hot take: The Supra is just a car and people are allowed to like or dislike it as they see fit

Promoted By is referring to the minute changes to the first gen made during its fifteen year production run.

I'm surprised at all that it got a bespoke engine what with manufactures all moving to two or three shared engines in their entire lineups.
![]() 01/22/2019 at 11:46 |
|
It’s not really bespoke. It’s just a different version of the B58 which is used in all the -40i bimmers. The bespoke engine will be the S58 which will debut in the new M3. Toyota ain’t getting that one.
![]() 01/22/2019 at 11:54 |

It's bespoke to the Toyota lineup.
![]() 01/22/2019 at 11:55 |

Maybe they’ll blow everyone’s minds and stick it in a BRZ.
![]() 01/22/2019 at 11:59 |

It's been in production for seven years. If they haven't put in a hot engine by now, they're never going to.

While I do agree that automakers should be more respectful of established brand identity, this is the wrong way to complain about it. Lots of cars, including Supras of yesteryear, have offered different transmissions, including automatics. I like manuals just as much as the next enthusiast, but it’s not an inherent part of the car’s identity.
If you want to hate on a car for being undeserving of a name, you have to focus on something more substantial than that. Like being FWD instead of RWD like previous generations. Or being rear/mid-engined instead of front-engined. These things drastically change the car into something completely different. The transmission does not.
The biggest discrepancy I see between the new Supra and the old ones is that it’s a 2-seater instead of a 2+2.
